MyActive launches Active Wellbeing Strategy to improve lives through movement

New three-year strategy outlines plans to tackle health inequalities, strengthen partnerships and help more local people become active across High Peak and Staffordshire Moorlands.

MyActive has today launched its Active Wellbeing Strategy 2026 to 2028, marking an important milestone in the organisation's evolution from a traditional leisure provider into a community-focused active wellbeing service.

The strategy sets out how MyActive will use the power of movement to improve health and wellbeing across the High Peak and Staffordshire Moorlands, working alongside local communities, councils, healthcare partners and voluntary organisations to create healthier, more connected places to live.

Since launching in October 2024, MyActive has been building strong foundations for this next chapter. Alongside investing in facilities and services, the organisation has developed a clear purpose, mission and values through extensive engagement with colleagues, ensuring the future direction reflects both the people delivering services and the communities they serve.

A clear purpose

At the heart of the strategy is a simple purpose: Improving lives through movement.

Supporting this is MyActive's mission: To create inclusive, welcoming environments which nurture health, wellbeing and community.

These statements provide the foundation for every decision, service and partnership over the next three years, ensuring MyActive continues to evolve in response to local need.

Focusing on where the greatest difference can be made

The strategy recognises that while being active benefits everyone, some communities face greater barriers to participating than others.

Working alongside partners and informed by the Move More High Peak and Move More Staffordshire Moorlands strategies, MyActive will focus particular attention on four priority groups:

  • Children and young people
  • Older people
  • People living with a limiting illness, long-term health condition or disability
  • People and families on lower incomes

By directing effort towards these communities, MyActive aims to play a greater role in reducing health inequalities and ensuring more people can enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of movement.

More than leisure

The Active Wellbeing Strategy reflects a broader ambition than simply increasing participation in gyms, swimming pools or fitness classes.

It recognises that movement can improve confidence, support mental wellbeing, strengthen communities, reduce loneliness and help people manage or prevent long-term health conditions.

As a locally owned organisation operating facilities across both districts, MyActive is uniquely placed to work alongside local partners to deliver meaningful, long-term impact that reaches beyond its leisure centres.

Working together

Partnership sits at the centre of the strategy.

Over the next three years, MyActive will continue working collaboratively across local networks and systems to support healthier communities and contribute towards wider economic and social wellbeing.

Rather than working in isolation, the strategy sets out an approach built on collaboration, recognising that lasting improvements in health are achieved by organisations working together with communities, not simply delivering services to them.

From strategy to action

The Active Wellbeing Strategy provides the overall direction for the organisation between 2026 and 2029.

It will be supported by local delivery plans for both High Peak and Staffordshire Moorlands, setting out the practical actions, timescales and measures that will guide delivery over the coming years. These plans will ensure local priorities remain at the heart of decision making while allowing MyActive to respond to the different needs of each community.

Looking ahead

The launch of the Active Wellbeing Strategy represents the beginning of MyActive's next phase of development.

Building on the progress already made since becoming a standalone organisation, MyActive will continue investing in its people, facilities, partnerships and services to create welcoming environments where everyone has the opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing through movement.

Whether someone is taking their first steps towards becoming more active, managing a long-term health condition, learning to swim, exercising with family or simply looking for a place to feel connected, MyActive's ambition remains the same.
