Laying foundations for state-of-the-art leisure centre in Leek

The new development at Leek in progress

Work on the redevelopment of MyActive Leek continues at pace as the demolition phase is completed and the foundations are laid for the new structure.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is leading the £17 million project to expand and fully modernise the facilities with the new health and wellbeing centre due to re-open in early 2026.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “A lot of progress has been made since the work started at the end of last year and things are already looking very different at the site.

“It’s great to see the foundations being laid for the new structure – it really helps to show the scale of the project we’re delivering here to provide a state-of-the-art facility for our residents and visitors now and for generations to come.”

The team are excited to see the progress that’s being made and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming people to this amazing new facility early next year.

When the centre re-opens, it will feature:

  • A new six-lane, 25m main pool with accessible access points
  • A new learner pool for lessons, classes and casual use
  • A new state of the art fitness suite
  • A new 25 bike immersive group cycling studio
  • A modern village changing area to serve the swimming pool areas
  • A fully-inclusive ‘changing places’ facility, supporting people with additional needs or disabilities
  • An improved café and reception area to relax and socialise in
  • A new community wellness suite to support people who are new to exercise, recovering from illness and injury or being referred by their GP
  • A new soft play to help children have fun and play

The project has been funded by £10.8m from the UK Government, £3m from the Council, £1.8m from Sport England, and over £1.1m from Salix for decarbonisation measures.

MyActive Managing Director, Rob Wilks, said: “The team are excited to see the progress that’s being made and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming people to this amazing new facility early next year.”
