Leek Leisure Centre Transformation Moves Forward with New General Manager Appointment

Adam Cope

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of Adam Cope as the new General Manager of MyActive Leek. This news marks another important milestone as preparations continue for the opening of the new centre in late summer 2026.

Adam has a long history with leisure in Leek and brings both professional experience and a deep personal connection to the town.

Adam said:

"I am very proud of this town and have deep roots in this area, and in particular, this leisure centre. My affinity for the leisure industry came from a very young age, from first of all having swimming lessons and then continuing on to lifesaving at Brough Park. I was recruited as Duty Manager at Brough Park in 2013 and progressed on to Operations Manager. When MyActive launched in October 2024, I became Operations Manager for Birchall Pavilions,  the community-based location for group exercise classes, whilst the redevelopment at Brough Park takes place.

Being recruited as General Manager at this wonderful, redeveloped facility is one of my proudest moments. The opportunity to lead MyActive Leek feels like a dream come true. I can’t wait for the community to be a part of it, and I hope we make the town of Leek very proud."

MyActive has begun building the team that will bring the new facility to life. The centre is expected to create between 25 and 40 new local jobs, with recruitment beginning soon across a range of roles, including Active Wellbeing assistants, swimming teachers, lifeguards, and customer experience coordinators.

Ian Sales, Head of Operations at MyActive, said:

“Adam’s appointment is a significant milestone for MyActive Leek. This is a transformational project for the Moorlands. Adam brings strong local knowledge and a clear commitment to inclusive active wellbeing. We’re excited to see him begin shaping the next chapter for leisure in Leek.

With construction progressing and interior design decisions well underway, the focus now turns to recruitment, community engagement and programme development.”

MyActive Leek is more than a traditional leisure centre. Located within Brough Park, the £17 million redevelopment, led by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, will create a modern, inclusive active wellbeing hub designed to support people of all ages and abilities to move more, feel better and live healthier lives.

When it opens, the centre will include:

  • A 25-metre main pool and separate teaching pool
  • Extended fitness suite and group exercise studios
  • An adventure soft play area and cafe
  • A dedicated active wellbeing suite to support people who are building confidence, on health-based programmes or who may have been referred by their GP/health professional
  • Thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces that place accessibility, comfort and community connection at the heart of every visit

The centre will be brought to life by a friendly, welcoming team who will be on hand to support people in lots of different ways, whether they are taking their first steps into activity, returning after time away, or looking to build healthy habits for the future.

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst said:

“I’m delighted that we have someone as committed and experienced as Adam at the helm as we start to build the team that will manage and run the fantastic new facility that we’re delivering in Leek.

“The physical redevelopment works are progressing really well and we can now really start to be excited about what we have to look forward to when the centre re-opens later this year. It will be a game-changer for the town – residents and members will have state-of-the-art amenities and services to support them to lead active, healthy lives for years and years to come.”

A MyActive Leek Jobs Fair will take place at Birchall Pavilion on Saturday, 9th May, giving local people the chance to meet the team, learn about the new facilities, available roles and find out more about the value of working in the leisure and wellbeing industry.

In addition, MyActive will be hosting pop-up stalls across Leek throughout the coming months, helping people to discover the new centre, learn about keeping active and explore employment opportunities ahead of the opening.

People interested in working at MyActive Leek are encouraged to keep an eye on MyActive social media channels for updates and visit myactive.uk/careers for the latest vacancies and application details.
