Olympic swimmer Abbie Wood officially opened the doors to the new MyActive Leek on Tuesday 15th September.
The Team GB swimmer joined representatives from MyActive, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, partners and members of the local community to celebrate the opening of the new centre at Brough Park.
Abbie, who is originally from Buxton, has represented Great Britain at two Olympic Games, competing at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. She has also enjoyed success on the international stage at World, European and Commonwealth level.
During the official opening event, Abbie did the honours of unveiling the plaque and spoke about the importance of having a local facility that supports the community in moving more and getting active, while also encouraging these habits from a young age.
She spoke about her own experience of using the MyActive Buxton and Leek swimming pools from an early age, which introduced her to her local swimming club and played a key role in her journey as an Olympic swimmer. Abbie described the opportunity to officially open MyActive Leek as a real full circle moment!
The event was a fantastic opportunity to bring together many of the people who have played a part in the project and celebrate what has been achieved. After years of planning, development and hard work, it was a special moment for everyone involved to come together and see the finished facility ready to serve the local community.
