On the last Friday in September, the pool at MyActive Buxton was buzzing with energy, determination, and more than a little splash as colleagues, members, and friends came together for a community swim challenge like no other.
The goal? To swim the distance of the English Channel (1,350 lengths) in three hours. The reality? An incredible 2,230 lengths completed, smashing the target out of the water!
Over 25 people took part, swimming anywhere from 12 to 220 lengths each. Four volunteers kept count from poolside while six enthusiastic supporters cheered the swimmers on, proving that encouragement can be just as powerful as endurance.
What made the event truly special were the personal stories behind the lengths:
- Sheri, who couldn’t swim at all this time last year, learned through Zink & Swim. She originally set a goal of 20 lengths, then pushed to 40 in August. On the day, she swam an amazing 70 lengths.
- Jacob, who has been to Zink & Swim three times, had never managed to swim before. With patient support from Martha, he set out for five lengths and proudly completed 14.
- David, an Olympic gold medallist who hadn’t swum in 30 years, rediscovered his love for the pool thanks to Zink & Swim, and clocked an impressive 80 lengths.
