When Julie Graham, 59 from Leek, suffered a spinal injury just as she was nearing retirement, she was told she might never walk again. It was a tough prognosis but not one she was willing to accept.
With physiotherapy only available every couple of weeks, Julie knew she needed something consistent to focus on day to day. That’s when she discovered the outdoor fitness equipment at Birchall playing fields.
Building strength, one morning at a time
Julie started going to Birchall just six weeks after her injury, turning up with a walking frame and taking things one step at a time. What began as simply trying to move again has grown into a regular routine she now relies on.
“This has been my physical training for recovery,” Julie says. “Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
These days she’s there three to five mornings a week! Doing 20-25 minute sessions that help her stay strong and mobile. Julie's routine includes:
- A warm up on the cross trainer
- Arm cycles to build core strength (something she found especially helpful for her spinal recovery)
- Leg presses (now up to 70kg!)
- A mix of arm raises, squats and leg raises
- Finishing off with a cool down on the bike
More than just a gym
For Julie it’s not just about the exercise. Being outdoors makes a huge difference. She describes it as both “rewarding and relaxing”... watching the birds, taking in the scenery and enjoying the fresh air.
It’s also become a bit of a social space. Over time, she’s met a regular group of people there with friendships forming and even the odd social invite along the way. There’s a real sense of community.
And because the facility is free and open 24/7, it removes a big barrier for people who might not otherwise have access to fitness equipment.
Spring into Action 2026
Julie’s story shows what can happen when you take that first step, especially outdoors. She’s now back to looking after her two allotments in Leek and recently enjoyed a two week trip to Scotland! Something she says wouldn’t have been possible earlier in her recovery.
“I’m probably fitter now than I was before the injury,” she says. “It’s helped me get back to where I want to be.”
As part of MyActive’s Spring into Action 2026 campaign, we’re encouraging people across the High Peak and Staffordshire Moorlands to give it a go. Whether you’re recovering from something or just want to feel better day to day, the outdoor gym at Birchall playing fields is there for everyone. And with a second site coming to Brough Park this summer, it’s a great time to get moving outdoors!
